This was my first regular gig. The band was the Western Aires and the venue was Duffy's Tavern. A very swank place, don't you think? Only a few fights and a lotta good honky tonk music. Joe Fortune and the guys were very good to a young kid just starting out...that's Joe on the bass. I understand that Duffy's burned down many years ago....must have been all the hot licks we left there. Thanks Joe.
This was another very important early gig for me. The club was Dick's Lounge. Andy Acree gave me a job playing lead guitar for his group "The Country Squires" (I had almost no experience having played mostly fiddle and banjo before) which was a very brave thing to do since I was greener than "goose $h*t. I sure learned alot from Andy and all the musicians he exposed me to. That's Andy's son Gene on drums. Thanks Andy.
This is a photo from a Sunday jam session at the old "Wishing Well". It seems like these were held every few monthes and it allowed the local musicians an opportunity to jam with guys that they wouldn't normally get to gig with. The man seated at the steel is Spibb Woodard. He gave me a job in his music store giving guitar and banjo lessons while I was in high school. Thanks Spibb.
