Gruhn/Collings D-2 Dreadnaught
This is another interesting guitar. It is a round shouldered, scalloped braced dreadnaught of Indian rosewood and sitka spruce designed by George Gruhn and built by Bill Collings in 1987. I purchased this guitar in 1989. It has a Joe Glaser custom installation of a Takamine Guitars 80's era pick-up system (like the one used by Ricky Skaggs for many years). It's tone is very even and focused throughout its range...a common trait in Collings guitars, I have since found out. I used it on the road and in the studio with Randy Travis and for my first year with Faith Hill. In 1995 I retired it and started touring with my Taylor 810. I recently ran into Gearge Gruhn backstage at the Opry, and he commented on this guitar. He was surprised to see it. He says there were only a dozen maybe less of these guitars made for his store.
