Dan Kelly played fiddle for Roy Acuff for many years. This is a violin that Roy gave to Dan. It is attributed to Pietro Guarnari (II) 1695-1762 of Mantua circa 1720. Howdy Forrester played it with the Smoky Mountain Boys for many years and when he passed on, Roy gave it to Dan to play. Roy purchased it from a string quartet player in Chicago during the 1960's. It has a very powerful sound. A rich "woody" tone with great carrying power that could be heard above an orchestra...or a banjo for that matter :-O Thanks to Dan for letting me play on it and for letting me take these pictures. |
